In recognition of Women’s History Month, we take time to celebrate the women who have helped shape the legal profession in California. At a time when women were often excluded from practicing law, determined pioneers fought for the opportunity to enter courtrooms, advocate for fairness, and expand access to justice. Their efforts not only opened doors for future generations of women attorneys but also helped redefine the role of female lawyers within the justice system.
Today, women attorneys continue to play a vital role in civil litigation, representing individuals, families, and communities seeking accountability and justice. Throughout California’s legal history, several women helped transform the profession and the justice system itself.
Pioneers of Justice
One of the most influential figures in California legal history is Clara Shortridge Foltz, widely recognized as the first woman admitted to practice law before the State Bar of California in 1878. At a time when the legal profession was overwhelmingly male, Foltz challenged laws that prevented women from becoming attorneys. She successfully advocated for changes to the law that allowed women to take the bar exam and practice law in California.
Rose Elizabeth Bird became the first female Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court in 1977. Bird’s appointment marked a significant moment for representation within the highest levels of the state’s legal system. As Chief Justice, she presided over complex constitutional and civil matters that shaped California law during a period of major legal and social change.
A towering figure in the modern history of the California judiciary is Joyce L. Kennard, who served as an Associate Justice of the California Supreme Court for 25 years. Born in West Java and of mixed heritage, Kennard overcame significant childhood hardships and physical disability to become a legal icon. Her appointment in 1989 made her the first Asian American to serve on California’s highest court.
