Black History Month is more than just a celebration—

Black History Month is more than just a celebration—it is a powerful recognition of the achievements, resilience, and central role of Black Americans in shaping U.S. history. It is a time to honor those who have paved the way for justice, equality, and progress, often in the face of adversity.

Its origins date back to 1926, when historian Carter G. Woodson established a week dedicated to promoting and celebrating the contributions of Black Americans and people of African descent. This week was strategically set to coincide with the birthdays of two pivotal figures: Frederick Douglass, who challenged President Lincoln to wield freedom as a weapon to end the Civil War, and Abraham Lincoln, who signed the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring that all enslaved people in the Southern states “are, and henceforward shall be free.”

What began as a single week quickly gained momentum, inspiring cities and universities across the nation to establish their own commemorations. By the 1960s, during the height of the Civil Rights Movement, Black History Week expanded into Black History Month on college campuses. In 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognized it nationally, urging Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”

Today, Black History Month serves as a reminder of the immeasurable contributions of Black leaders, thinkers, and advocates—figures who not only changed history but reshaped the very foundation of justice in America. From Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass leading the fight against slavery to Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, Shirley Chisholm, and Thurgood Marshall breaking barriers in civil rights, government, and law, their courage continues to inspire the pursuit of justice and equity for all.

Their efforts secured fundamental rights that we as legal professionals fight to protect every day. Landmark cases like Shelley v. Kraemer upheld the right to fair housing, Brown v. Board of Educationdismantled segregation in public schools, and Sweatt v. Painter ensured that graduate and professional education could not be divided by race. These victories transformed our legal system and expanded protections for all.

Yet, the fight for justice is far from over. Civil rights remain under threat, and it is our collective responsibility to safeguard the progress generations before us fought so hard to achieve. Discrimination, negligence, and abuse of power continue to disproportionately harm underserved communities, making legal advocacy more critical than ever.

At Dordick Law, we are committed to carrying forward the legacy of Black history—standing up for the marginalized, holding wrongdoers accountable, and ensuring that every individual, regardless of background, has access to safety, dignity, and justice. We honor the past by continuing the fight in the present—because justice must not only be remembered but relentlessly pursued.

I’m so grateful that Brittney Ghadoushi was assigned as my attorney. She consistently showed genuine care and always kept my best interests at heart. While compassion isn’t something most people expect from a lawyer, Brittney managed to be both empathetic and tenacious. She fought tirelessly to ensure a fair outcome for me, even in the face of highly uncooperative defense attorneys.
