At Dordick Law, with offices in Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, and Riverside, we've handled all kinds of injury cases, but some of the hardest to prove are the ones you can't see. That was the challenge in one of our recent cases: Gibson v. Universal Studios.
Mr. Gibson was working on the Universal Studios lot, walking back from lunch, when a gate arm on a traffic control gate unexpectedly came down and struck him on the head. What might seem like a minor incident had devastating consequences. Because of his history of multiple concussions, this blow triggered a mild traumatic brain injury (TBI), an injury that would permanently change his life.
What Made This Case So Difficult
Mild TBIs are some of the most misunderstood injuries in personal injury law. There's often no visible damage, no broken bones, and nothing that shows up clearly on a CT or MRI. The person might look and sound fine, but inside, their brain has been shaken in ways that affect memory, focus, sleep, personality, and more.
Trial attorney Gary A. Dordick explained, “The science behind a mild TBI is complex, and it's hard for jurors to grasp when someone looks normal. We needed to make this invisible injury real.”
Bringing the Injury to Life with Visuals
That's when we brought in MotionLit. Gary had just taken over the case and quickly realized we didn't yet have any medical illustrations or graphics. That needed to change, fast. MotionLit jumped in and created powerful visuals showing axonal shearing, the internal brain damage caused when the brain shifts violently inside the skull.
“I can talk about an injury all day,” Gary A. Dordick said. “But when the jury sees a single image that makes everything click, that's the game-changer.”
MotionLit also helped us comb through hundreds of hours of video depositions. With over 30 witnesses, we needed to be strategic. They created a clean, sharp video presentation so Gary A. Dordick could play the most impactful clips in court, getting right to the story's heart.
The Defense Didn't Take It Seriously.......Until the Verdict
Despite the evidence and our client's suffering, the defense came in with an insultingly low offer. Rather than settle for less than our client deserved, we took the case to trial. In the end, the jury awarded $7.6 million.
Why It Mattered
This case was about more than just money—it was about helping the jury understand the impact of a life-altering injury that can't be seen on a scan. It was about fighting back when the other side tried to downplay our client's pain. It was about using every tool available, from words to visuals to strategy, to ensure our client received justice.
Huge thanks to MotionLit for helping us bring this case to life in the courtroom. And to Mr. Gibson, we're honored to have fought this fight on your behalf.
