Pedestrian Accidents and Halloween - We Can Help!

Trick or Treat! As the sun sets on October 31st, the Halloween festivities will begin as superheroes, vampires, and princesses march on the streets for a fun night with family and friends. Our communities become busy and loud as both adults and children alike enjoy the evening in their best costumes. Although Halloween is a day of excitement, it is also a day where the risk of injuries and fatalities for pedestrians sadly rises. Here are some statistics and tips for you and your family to have a safe Halloween whether as a pedestrian, driver or other roadway user.

The Scary Statistics

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there is a 43% increase in pedestrian fatalities on Halloween. The majority of pedestrian deaths occur between 5-9 pm, with the highest risk period being from 6-7 pm. These hours are likely the peak times when people are out on the streets for activities. In 2022, nearly 50% of crash fatalities were related to alcohol use. Due to these risks, parents need to be extra alert as children are twice as likely to be hit by a vehicle on Halloween than on any other night. Most child pedestrian fatalities occur in residential neighborhoods, where lack of sidewalks, lighting, traffic control and signs can all play a factor in pedestrian accidents.

Safety Tips and Precautions

Pedestrians need to have safety in mind when on the streets:

  • Look both ways before crossing.
  • Parents should hold their children's hands when crossing the road.
  •  Avoid wearing masks that can obstruct your view.
  •  Carry a flashlight and/or use reflective tape and glowsticks to make yourself visible to pedestrians and motorists.
  • Make sure a responsible adult is supervising young children outside.
  •  Instruct older children to walk with a partner or group.
  •  Avoid walking in dark and dimly lit areas alone.

Motorists must also exercise safety and caution when driving on Halloween:

  •  Make sure to watch for adults and children on curbs, crossings and turns.
  •    Drive according to the speed limit in residential areas and neighborhoods.
  •  Watch for pedestrians in dark clothing.
  •   Slow down and be vigilant for pedestrians in dark and dimly lit areas.
  •  Do not drink and drive.

Children across the nation are excited to dress up and collect the biggest stash of candies among their friends. Adults look forward to escaping the daily grind of work for one night. By being proactive and alert, we can all do our part in making sure everyone's Halloween is at its spooky best. Unfortunately, accidents do happen and you may be in need of legal assistance to know your rights.
